people think of sightseeing in Shonan, the ocean usually comes to mind\u2014but one place you definitely shouldn\u2019t miss is <strong>Enoshima Shrine<\/strong>.<br>In this article, I\u2019ll introduce this iconic shrine, often considered the heart of Enoshima sightseeing, along with its history, highlights, access from Enoshima Station, and nearby spots worth visiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What Kind of Shrine Is Enoshima Shrine?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enoshima Shrine is a large-scale Shinto shrine whose grounds extend across the entire island of Enoshima in Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture.<br>It is said to have been founded in <strong>552 (the 13th year of Emperor Kinmei\u2019s reign)<\/strong>, giving it a history of nearly 1,500 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shrine enshrines three sister goddesses known collectively as the <strong>Enoshima Three Deities<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tagitsuhime-no-Mikoto<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tagirihime-no-Mikoto<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These three deities are believed to grant blessings for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2714 Love and relationships<br>\u2714 Financial fortune<br>\u2714 Performing arts and creativity<br>\u2714 Business prosperity<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to this wide range of blessings, the shrine has long been worshipped not only by visitors but also by local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visiting the Three Shrines Is the Classic Route<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enoshima Shrine isn\u2019t just one shrine\u2014it consists of <strong>three separate shrines<\/strong> located around the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Hetsumiya Shrine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located near the entrance of Enoshima, this shrine features a vivid vermilion hall and attracts the largest number of worshippers.<br>The Enoshima Escar (paid escalator) also starts here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Nakatsumiya Shrine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Situated a bit higher up, this shrine offers great views.<br>The open grounds feel especially refreshing on a clear day, with beautiful blue skies and ocean scenery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Okutsumiya Shrine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located at the far end of the island, this shrine has a calm, sacred atmosphere. Personally, it feels like the most \u201cspiritual\u201d spot on Enoshima.<br>Nearby, you\u2019ll also find small power spots such as <strong>Turtle Rock<\/strong> and <strong>Power Stone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Enoshima Iwaya Caves Are a Must-See<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond Okutsumiya lies <strong>Enoshima Iwaya<\/strong>, sea caves formed by wave erosion. They are also known as places where ascetic monks once trained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The caves are cool inside, and the candle-lit walkway adds a sense of adventure.<br>On a clear day, the view of the ocean from deep inside the cave is especially beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Food and Strolling After Your Visit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fun of Enoshima Shrine doesn\u2019t end with worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Local specialty <strong>shirasu rice bowls<\/strong> (fresh raw shirasu if you\u2019re lucky!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Octopus rice crackers<\/strong> along the approach (the lines are long, but it\u2019s part of the fun)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relaxing at seaside caf\u00e9s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I visited early in the morning this time, which allowed me to enjoy a fresh shirasu rice bowl\u2014making it a very satisfying trip overall!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to Get to Enoshima Shrine from Enoshima Station<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One great thing about Enoshima Shrine is that there are <strong>several nearby stations<\/strong>. You can walk from any of them, but if it\u2019s your first time, the following routes are easy to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From Katase-Enoshima Station (Odakyu Line) \u2013 about 15 minutes on foot<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the most popular route among tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exit the station and head toward the shopping street in front<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walk straight while browsing souvenir shops and restaurants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cross <strong>Enoshima Benten Bridge<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After crossing the bridge,
